Artist Statement

I have been told my paintings tell stories. They do for me. Sometimes the stories are known to me, and sometimes they are imagined. I enjoy observing the people around me and am drawn to the small, everyday moments that offer a glimpse into their lives. A person’s expression, a gathering, or a figure moving through a city street can make me wonder who they are, what has brought them to that moment, and what might happen next. Sometimes I know the people and their stories firsthand. Other times, a photograph I have taken is simply a starting point, and as I paint, I wonder about the lives of people I don’t know. I’m drawn to the space between what I see and what I imagine.

My earliest paintings were inspired by my sons and their friends as they grew from childhood into adulthood. Over time, my subjects expanded to include the river towns near my home, the streets and neighborhoods of New York City and Philadelphia, and other places I encounter in my travels. Although my work has grown to include urban landscapes and scenes of everyday life, people remain a common thread throughout my work.

Working primarily in watercolor, I create paintings in both full color and black and white that explore themes of connection, memory, and community. I paint on both paper and Aquabord, choosing each surface for the unique qualities it brings to the mood, texture, and character of the work. I am drawn to watercolor for its transparency and luminosity, as well as the way pigments mingle, layer, and interact on the surface to create subtle shifts of color, light, and atmosphere.

I hope my paintings leave room for the viewer to wonder, imagine, and create a story of their own.
